SUMMARY:Doheny Distinguished Lecture Series April 2024 — Christine Curcio\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:The x\,y\,z\,t of age-related macular degeneration and the possibility of precision prevention\n \n \n \n \n \n Our 2023-24 Doheny Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) April lecture will be delivered by Christine Curcio\, PhD\, on Wednesday\, April 3\, 2024. Please refer to the lecture details below. \n\nDate: 4/3/24\nDLS Speaker: Christine Curcio\, PhDWhite-McKee Endowed Professor of Ophthalmology (2018-2024)\, Heersink School of Medicine\, The University of Alabama at Birmingham\nTime: 12:00 – 1:00 pm\nLocation: Doheny Eye Institute\, Conference Center\, 150 North Orange Grove Blvd.\, Pasadena\, CA\n\nBio:Christine Curcio\, PhD is a world-renowned vision researcher who has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the anatomic and molecular pathobiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)\, the leading cause of vision loss in aged adults. Using tools of digital histology\, her lab has made important discoveries regarding the composition and role of drusen deposits in human AMD while also identifying other key hallmarks of the disease such as photoreceptor loss\, gliosis\, and RPE transdifferentiation. These findings have formed the basis for both mechanistic investigations into AMD pathogenesis and improved clinical diagnosis of AMD worldwide. Dr. Curcio’s research has been supported by multiple NIH grants and foundations. She has logged >250 PubMed entries\, >32\,000 citations\, and an H-index of 82. For her contributions to vision research\, Dr. Curcio has received several awards including the 2002 (inaugural) Roger H. Johnson Prize for Macular Degeneration research\, 2014 Ludwig von Sallmann Prize\, 2020 Research to Prevent Blindness – David F. Weeks Award\, and the 2022 Lawrence A. Yannuzzi Lectureship of the International Retinal Imaging Society. \nIn 2022\, she became a Laureate of the Future Vision Foundation. Dr. Curcio earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Rochester and did postdoctoral training at Boston University and the University of Washington-Seattle before joining the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1990\, from which she recently retired to become a private consultant and visiting faculty. \n \n REGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Doheny-UCLA Breakfast Forum at ARVO 2024
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Perspectives on Retinopathy\nRetinopathy remains the leading cause of vision loss in the global working population. Regardless of whether it is triggered by ischemia or diabetes\, the late vision-threatening stage of retinopathy is marked by VEGF-mediated pathological neovascularization and concomitant vascular leakage. As such\, anti-VEGF therapies have long been the preferred strategy to manage retinopathies in the clinic. Yet\, these treatments are not fully effective in a large number of patients and require repeated eye injections in those who respond favorably. The apparent clinical need to manage retinopathies more effectively has led to a growing interest in looking beyond VEGF and addressing retinopathy as a multifactorial condition involving myriad risk factors. \nTo this end\, emerging evidence has begun to provide tantalizing new perspectives on the pathogenesis of retinopathy. Among these are the potential role of innate immune cells\, genetic risk factors\, and retinal lipids/cholesterol. This Doheny ARVO breakfast forum aims to bring together experts who have made significant advances in our mechanistic understanding of these fresh perspectives. We believe that such interactions will spawn further interest in discovering other previously unrecognized determinants of retinopathy. \n \n \n \n \n \n Presentations / Speakers \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Novel Role of Lipids in Pathogenesis of Diabetic Retinopathy
Julia V. SUMMARY:Doheny Distinguished Lecture Series December 2024 — David R. Williams\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Through Retinal Ganglion Cells\n \n \n \n \n \n Our 2024 Doheny Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) December lecture was delivered by David R. Williams\, PhD\, on Friday\, December 13\, 2024. Please refer to the lecture details below. \n\nDate: 12/13/24\nDLS Speaker: David R. Williams\, PhDWilliam G. Allyn Endowed Professor of Medical OpticsDirector\, Center for Visual Science\, University of Rochester\nTime: 12:00 – 1:00 pm\nLocation: Doheny Eye Institute\, 2nd Floor Conference Room\, 150 North Orange Grove Blvd.\, Pasadena\, CA\n\nBio:Dr. Williams received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California\, San Diego\, in 1979. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Bell Laboratories\, Murray Hill\, he joined the University of Rochester faculty in 1981. Dr. Williams’ research program marshals advanced optical technology to address questions about vision in the normal and diseased eye. His research team demonstrated the first adaptive optics system for the eye\, showing that vision in the laboratory can be improved beyond that provided by conventional spectacles. This work was instrumental in the development of wavefront sensors that can provide a complete description of the eye’s aberrations and are now used to improve vision correction technologies such as spectacles\, contact lenses\, intraocular lenses\, and refractive surgery. His group also demonstrated the first closed-loop adaptive optics ophthalmoscope\, which can image the normal and diseased retina at a microscopic\, cellular spatial scale. An early application of this technology revealed the topography of all three cone classes in the living human retina. \nMore recently\, Dr. Williams and his colleagues have deployed adaptive optics to improve our understanding of the role played by retinal processing in vision\, having developed a method to optically record from retinal ganglion cells and also to optogenetically drive ganglion cell responses with light in the living primate eye. For nearly three decades\, until 2021\, Dr. Williams served as director of the University of Rochester’s Center for Visual Science\, an interdepartmental program of 45 faculty researchers invested in vision science and ophthalmology. From 2011–2019\, Dr. Williams also served as Dean for Research in Arts\, Sciences\, and Engineering. Awards include the Edgar G. Tillyer Award\, the Friedenwald Award\, the Bressler Prize\, the Champalimaud Vision Award\, the Beckman Argyros Award\, the RPB David F. Weeks Award for Outstanding Vision Research\, and the Rank Prize in Optoelectronics. He is a member of the National Academy of Inventors and the National Academy of Sciences.
