SUMMARY:Doheny Distinguished Alumnus Dinner: Celebrating John C. Affeldt\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for joining us for a special evening as we celebrated John C. Affeldt\, MD\, our 2026 Doheny Distinguished Alumnus. \nThis was a fun and meaningful gathering\, an opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni\, share stories\, and reminisce about your time at Doheny. Dr. Affeldt’s career reflects the very best of Doheny’s traditions: rigorous training\, generous teaching\, and lifelong service. A cornea and ocular surface specialist\, dedicated educator\, and longtime steward of the Doheny alumni community\, he embodies the spirit and legacy that make Doheny so special. \nSaturday\, March 21\, 20265:30 PM – 9:00 PMPrivate club in Pasadena\, CA \nAbout Dr. Affeldt2026 Doheny Distinguished AlumnusJohn C. Affeldt\, MD\, is a cornea and ocular surface specialist whose career reflects the very best of Doheny’s traditions: rigorous training\, generous teaching\, and lifelong service. He earned his medical degree at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and completed his internship\, research fellowship\, residency\, and cornea fellowship training through the Doheny program and at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. \nFrom 1996 to 2005\, Dr. Affeldt returned to L.A. County/USC Medical Center as a volunteer attending\, devoting countless hours to the education and mentorship of residents and fellows. In clinic\, conference rooms\, and operating rooms\, he became a trusted teacher and steady presence\, helping to shape the careers of over 70 ophthalmologists\, many of whom are now respected leaders in academic medicine\, clinical practice\, and organized ophthalmology. \nDr. Affeldt’s professional interests span dry eye disease\, neurotrophic keratitis\, and complex ocular surface and inflammatory conditions. Today\, he pursues his academic career as an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University Eye Institute and as Director of the Dry Eye Center of Excellence\, where his work continues to blend clinical innovation with a deep commitment to education. His contributions to research\, clinical trials\, and continuing medical education are plentiful and have garnered multiple Teacher of the Year honors. \nEqually important is Dr. Affeldt’s dedication to preserving Doheny’s history and community. He has long served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Doheny Professional Alumni Association and was instrumental in creating a commemorative book honoring Doheny residents\, fellows\, attendings\, and interns from the earliest days at L.A. County/USC Medical Center through 2006. \nIn recognition of a career that has influenced people\, preserved history\, and advanced the field\, Dr. John C. Affeldt has been selected as the 2026 Doheny Distinguished Alumnus.
