April 2017

Los Angeles, April 11, 2017 – Doheny Eye Institute’s Alex Huang, MD, PhD, is #1 on The Ophthalmologist magazine’s Power List 2017, a ranking of the most influential people in the field. This year’s rankings focused on the “rising stars” of ophthalmology. Young leaders in ophthalmology were nominated by colleagues, and an expert panel made the final selections to create the annual list.

Dr. Huang is a glaucoma specialist at Doheny Eye Institute, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. His work focuses on advanced imaging techniques with the goal of learning more about fluid flow in the human eye. Dr. Huang’s goal is to improve diagnosis and treatment for glaucoma patients. His research has drawn support from the National Institute of Health, the American Glaucoma Society and Research to Prevent Blindness.

As an undergraduate at Pomona College, Dr. Huang studied neuroscience and molecular biology. His work as an MD/PhD candidate at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine focused on amino acids and their role in retinal development. This led him to his residency training in ophthalmology, which he completed at Doheny Eye Institute.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition from my colleagues and from The Ophthalmologist magazine,” says Dr. Huang. “Being at the top of this list is great affirmation of the important and promising work that our lab is doing.”

Pearse Keane, an ophthalmic imaging specialist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, is #5 on the Power List 2017. Dr. Keane received training at the Doheny Image Reading Center. Also receiving recognition on the list is Elliot Sohn, MD, a Doheny alumnus, who is currently a surgeon and researcher at the University of Iowa.
The Power List 2017 is published in the April 2017 issue of The Ophthalmologist, available in print and online.
