The Stephen J. Ryan Initiative for Macular Research (RIMR) Annual Meeting 2022

April 2022

The Stephen J. Ryan Initiative for Macular Research (RIMR) at the Doheny Eye Institute held its 12th annual meeting March 29 – 31, 2022 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, California. This meeting focuses on enhancing our fundamental understanding of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness among those over 60 years of age in the developed world.

Each year the program’s Executive Committee invites prominent leaders from a variety of backgrounds and scientific fields with the aim to establish new contacts across scientific fields and specialties, encourage new lines of communication, stimulate new ideas, and present collaborative opportunities beyond traditional/institutional barriers.

The program emphasizes teamwork as well as innovative, “outside-the-box” thinking. Breakout groups comprised of researchers and clinicians from a variety of fields and expertise in aging and senescence, biochemistry, biostatistics, cell biology, cell survival, epidemiology, genetics, imaging, immunology, inflammation, nanoscience, ophthalmology, psychophysics, and stem cells, share their understanding of issues in their own fields to the challenges of AMD research.

The RIMR program provides such a unique opportunity for the sharing of ideas and research strategies among a diverse group of experts representing a wide range of scientific disciplines, each providing a valuable perspective on how best to study and treat AMD. The ultimate goal of the RIMR is to accelerate discovery in treatments that will slow or stop the progression of AMD, restore vision, and make the gift of sight a possibility for millions of people around the world.
