About Mark Borchert, MD

Mark S. Borchert, MD is director of the Eye Birth Defects Program and Eye Technology Program in The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Borchert is Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Dr. Borchert has been listed in “Best Doctors in America” for 24 years. He has received honors from the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Board of Ophthalmology and Society of Heed Fellows, as well as several teaching awards from the Keck School of Medicine. He has mentored more than 30 fellows, and countless residents and medical students.

Dr. Borchert directs the world’s largest study into optic nerve hypoplasia, the single leading cause of permanent congenital blindness in infants in the United States and Europe. He is also at the forefront of research on cortical visual impairment, the leading cause of any vision impairment in infants. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and 17 book chapters. He holds five patents for non-invasive monitoring methods.

At Doheny, Dr. Borchert is best known for his commitment to excellence, his passion for training the next generation of ophthalmologists, promoting the spirit of camaraderie, and his affability. For his service to Doheny and his continued contributions to the welfare of ophthalmology, we thank him and happily bestow upon him the 2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
