Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Our partnership with UCLA Stein Eye Institute, now celebrating five years, continues to deliver the kinds of collaborations and benefits we believed were possible.

Both Doheny and UCLA Stein Eye have rich traditions of excellence.  Thanks to imagination, innovation and many resources available across both campuses, I am pleased to say this partnership is a beacon to the future of vision science research.

Embarking on this historic affiliation required vision and risk.  We decided to take this path because we saw potential for Doheny, for our work, and for our patients.  The rewards of this partnership include an expanded impact in advances in vision science research, state-of-the art clinical care throughout Los Angeles, improved educational programs and initiatives, and in designing a new campus and labs for Doheny where our collaborations can grow even further –yielding results for patients everywhere.

I feel fortunate that my colleagues Dr. Bartly Mondino, chair of the UCLA Department of Ophthalmology and Director of UCLA Stein Eye; Marissa Goldberg, Doheny’s Executive Director;  and Dr. Alfredo Sadun, vice chair of Doheny Eye Center UCLA, have dedicated themselves to ensuring the start of the partnership, encouraging its growth, and achieving maximal success for all.  Our collaborations with UCLA Stein faculty continue to flourish and constantly provide us new avenues to explore in vision research. Thanks to ongoing conversations, open doors, and cross-campus resources, there are benefits to this affiliation that cannot be easily measured, and benefits that may be intangible but clearly add up to more than what Doheny can do alone.

Our shared clinical and research fellows are one example of how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  Doheny and UCLA Stein Eye have started a new tradition that deepens our strength by shared work and goals.

We are grateful for the guidance of our board and generous supporters who encouraged us to launch this partnership, and keep our focus on the future. The connections and creativity already thriving between Doheny and UCLA Stein Eye are poised to produce sight-saving benefits for the world.
