Continuing Medical Education in Action: Highlights from the 4th Annual Doheny-UCLA International Retina Symposium
Continuing medical education (CME) plays a vital role in improving patient outcomes by ensuring clinicians stay at the forefront of rapidly evolving science and technology. Through CME programs, physicians exchange real-world experiences, evaluate emerging therapies, and refine clinical decision-making, all of which ultimately strengthens the quality of care delivered to patients in our communities.
That commitment to lifelong learning was evident on January 31, when ophthalmologists and retina specialists gathered at Doheny Eye Institute for the 4th Annual Doheny-UCLA International Retina Symposium. Designed as a dynamic forum for collaboration and discovery, the program brought together experts to explore advances in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), surgical innovation, and translational research shaping the future of retina care.

Mark W. Johnson, MD
This year’s symposium featured international keynote perspectives from Sobha Sivaprasad, MD, FRCOphth, Director of the Moorfields Clinical Research Facility and Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Mark W. Johnson, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology and Section Head of Retina at the Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan. Their insights offered attendees practical strategies and a global perspective on managing complex retinal disease.
Throughout the day, faculty discussions and case-based learning reinforced the collaborative culture that defines the Doheny-UCLA partnership. The symposium was co-directed by Michael S. Ip, MD, and Giulia Corradetti, MD, whose leadership helped shape a rigorous and clinically relevant program grounded in improving patient outcomes.
We extend our sincere thanks to the UCLA Department of Ophthalmology retina faculty, invited speakers, and participants who helped make this year’s symposium a meaningful exchange of ideas and expertise. Programs like this reflect Doheny’s ongoing commitment to advancing education, innovation, and excellence in vision care.
SriniVas R. Sadda, MD, Honored with APAO Senior Achievement Award
Doheny Eye Institute proudly celebrates SriniVas R. Sadda, MD, who was selected to receive the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Senior Achievement Award at the 41st APAO Congress in Hong Kong.
This prestigious recognition highlights Dr. Sadda’s longstanding contributions to global ophthalmic education and his leadership in advancing scientific exchange across the Asia-Pacific region. His work has helped shape educational programming that connects clinicians and researchers worldwide, strengthening collaboration and accelerating innovation in retina care.
While attending the Congress, Dr. Sadda also presented at the Nikon-Optos Lunch Symposium, where he discussed the clinical benefits of ultra-widefield RGB imaging and peripheral OCT, technologies that continue to transform how retinal disease is diagnosed and managed.
We congratulate Dr. Sadda on this well-deserved honor and thank him for representing Doheny on the global stage.
Doheny in the News: Brian A. Francis, MD, MS, Featured in Glaucoma Physician
As part of Glaucoma Awareness Month coverage, Glaucoma Physician spotlighted Brian A. Francis, MD, MS, highlighting advances in glaucoma diagnosis and patient-centered care. The feature emphasized the importance of early detection for a disease often called the “silent thief of sight,” which affects millions yet frequently progresses without symptoms.
In the interview, Dr. Francis discussed how emerging technologies and personalized treatment strategies are helping clinicians better manage glaucoma and preserve vision. His insights reflect Doheny’s broader commitment to innovation and education aimed at improving outcomes for patients at risk of vision loss.
