Doheny-AAO-2025-2

With just a few weeks left until the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting, taking place from October 18 to 20 in Orlando, FL, Doheny is proud to share that several clinicians have been selected to present their research and lead educational sessions.

Topics that Doheny experts will present on include: the impact of artificial intelligence on physicians and patients, vitreoretinal surgery, Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and gene therapy, angle closure glaucoma, and uveitis. See the schedule here.

Doheny will also have a joint exhibition booth with Stein Eye Institute (Booth #1965), and the two Institutes will also host the much-anticipated Annual Alumni Reception on October 18. Doheny Professional Alumni Association (PAA) members can find more information and RSVP at this link.

We look forward to reconnecting with many esteemed colleagues and PAA members at AAO this year.

Dr. Alfredo Sadun to Chair the 2025 Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy Forum

Alfredo Sadun, MD, PhD, was selected to chair this year’s Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) Forum, taking place virtually on Nov. 17. This year’s program theme is “Evidence-Based LHON” and will feature international faculty presenting the latest research and clinical perspectives on LHON.

LHON is a rare, mitochondrially inherited eye disorder that affects the optic nerve and leads to vision loss. It predominately impacts young men, with the onset of symptoms most commonly occurring between the ages of 15 to 35 years old. Symptoms include sudden loss of central vision in one eye, usually followed by similar vision loss in the other eye within just a few months. There is currently no cure for LHON, but Dr. Sadun, a world-renowned expert in LHON, is actively researching and pioneering treatments to help slow vision loss and improve symptoms.

Dr. Kaustabh Ghosh Awarded Three-Year National Eye Institute Grant

Dr-Ghosh-Doheny

Reinforcing the importance of his innovative research on diabetic eye disease, Kaustabh Ghosh, PhD, has been awarded a three-year federal R01 grant from the National Eye Institute. The grant will provide over $1.5 million in support for his project, “Mechanobiology of Retinal Vascular Inflammation and Degeneration in Diabetes,” which will advance the understanding of the cellular and biomechanical mechanisms that drive diabetic eye disease.

Federal funding is critical for advancing scientific discoveries that unlock new understanding of the eye and the causes of eye disease, paving the way to new treatments. Being recognized with federal grants underscores the leadership and impact of Doheny Eye Institute in vision research.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ghosh on this accomplishment. We look forward to sharing updates on his research in the coming months.
