Deborah Ferrington, PhD, Spoke at the Rotary Club of Pasadena

On July 31, Doheny’s Chief Scientific Officer Deborah Ferrington, PhD, was a guest speaker for the Rotary Club of Pasadena. Dr. Ferrington spoke on the topic, “Healthy Summer Series: Doheny Eye Institute’s Visionary Research,” which highlighted Doheny’s groundbreaking work in vision science.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with an engaging and dynamic group of attendees, while educating them about the importance of vision research and the work that Doheny scientists conduct.

Summer Student Researchers Support Doheny Investigations

      Doheny-Summer-Student-Researchers-2024

This summer, eight student research interns have been supporting Doheny’s Principal Investigators. These positions not only bolster regular lab staff in accomplishing their work, but also benefit the students as they receive valuable hands-on experience and peer mentoring in a real world research environment.

Three of the onsite student researchers come to Doheny through Caltech’s renowned Student Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) Program which pairs qualified student researchers with opportunities in on-campus and nearby labs, including Doheny Eye Institute. Currently, the three undergraduate students are assisting in the labs of Dr. Deborah Ferrington, Dr. Steven Barnes and Dr. Kaustabh Ghosh.

Two other interns from outside the region are working remotely to support AI efforts at the Doheny Image Reading and Research Lab (DIRRL). Finally, three young scientists — a Pasadena Community College student and two area high school students — are also assisting onsite research at Doheny.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming fall issue of InSight for further coverage of this significant win-win program which benefits both Doheny’s research teams and the participating students.
