Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation Generously Donates $1.5M to Doheny Eye Institute
Doheny Eye Institute is thrilled to announce that the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation has generously donated $1.5M to support our vision research over the next five years.
The shared seeds of our two organizations – both namesakes of Mrs. Doheny which continue to champion causes that were of the utmost importance to her – makes this donation even more significant.
Doheny Eye Institute was founded in 1947 by Mrs. Doheny after she experienced sudden, catastrophic vision loss. It was built upon a mission to conserve, improve and restore human eyesight. The Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation was founded just two years later to continue her philanthropic work in Los Angeles through supportive grants to organizations that work to improve the welfare, health and education of its residents.
As the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation embarks upon its 75th anniversary year, we are honored and thankful for their generous support that helps enable Doheny Eye Institute to continue groundbreaking vision research that stays true to the mission Mrs. Doheny envisioned decades ago.

Sadun, MD, PhD, were lead authors of a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) (September 2023) that explored how a single amino acid mutation occurring in the blinding disease, Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), impairs electron shuttling in mitochondria. Read it here.
Kaustabh Ghosh, PhD, served as senior author of a published study in Diabetes (November 2023) that identified a novel approach to early diabetic retinopathy prevention. Read more here.
