November 2025

Looking Back at a Successful American Academy of Ophthalmology 2025 Meeting

Last month, eye care professionals from around the world gathered in Orlando, FL, for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting. Doheny demonstrated its leadership in vision research and ophthalmology with a strong onsite presence.

Throughout the multi-day conference, 10 Doheny-affiliated clinician-scientists shared their expertise across several sessions, presenting on topics including artificial intelligence in clinical care, vitreoretinal surgery, Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and gene therapy, angle closure glaucoma, and uveitis.

Doheny and Stein Eye Institutes also welcomed more than 1,000 visitors to a shared booth at the AAO Expo, providing an important opportunity to connect with eye care professionals from across the field.

Each year, a highlight of AAO is the Doheny and Stein Eye Institutes’ annual Alumni Reception. This year, nearly 200 guests attended the lively evening of networking, conversation and reconnecting with colleagues.

Thanks to the outstanding reputation of Doheny and the experts who presented at AAO, Managed Healthcare Executive interviewed Dr. Alfredo Sadun and Dr. Michael Gilhooley, publishing four articles based on their presentations:

Thank you to everyone who joined Doheny and Stein Eye Institutes at our shared booth, Alumni Reception, and scientific sessions. Your engagement helps advance the future of vision science.

During this season of giving, we invite you to consider giving the gift of sight by supporting life-changing vision research at Doheny Eye Institute.

Saving human eyesight has been Doheny’s core mission for nearly 80 years. Over the decades, we have earned national and international recognition for advancing the understanding and treatment of ocular diseases through groundbreaking scientific discoveries that have shaped vision care around the world.

Led by CEO Marissa Goldberg and Chief Scientific Officer Deborah A. Ferrington, PhD, Doheny’s world-class scientists and clinician-scientists are actively investigating diseases that cause vision loss and blindness, including diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). Our researchers are also developing high-resolution ocular imaging tools and pioneering applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in early detection and diagnosis.

This represents only a portion of the innovative work happening at Doheny every day – research that can spark new therapies, deepen our understanding of disease, and shape the future of vision care.

As a non-profit, Doheny relies on grants and donor support to continue driving world-class research. Generous contributions help ensure our scientists have the equipment and resources needed to remain at the forefront of discovery.
