Our Mission: To further the conservation, improvement and restoration of human eyesight
Doheny’s overarching vision is to have the greatest impact on human eyesight by leading our field with groundbreaking research and superior education programs that help advance eye care in our local community and around the world.Positive Impact on Vision Science
For over 75 years, Doheny Eye Institute has been at the forefront of vision science. From seeking new ways to free blockages that prevent fluid drainage in glaucoma, to replacing retinal cells in age-related macular degeneration, to providing colleagues worldwide with standardized analyses of anatomical changes in the eyes of patients, Doheny clinicians and scientists are changing how people see—and also how they think about the future of vision.
US News & World Report continues to rank Doheny Eye Institute among the top 10 ophthalmology programs in the nation for more than 20 consecutive years. This distinction is based on the advanced research and clinical expertise of Doheny scientists and physicians for a true bench-to-bedside approach.
Doheny Eye Institute and UCLA Stein Eye Institute have joined forces to offer the best in vision research and education. Doheny Eye Center UCLA, managed by UCLA Health, offers exceptional patient care services. This affiliation combines the strength, reputation and distinction of two of the nation’s top eye institutions to advance vision research, education and patient care in Southern California.
Doheny Image Reading Center
Among Doheny’s most significant resources is the Doheny Image Reading Center (DIRC), uniquely capable of providing physicians, scientists, and industry with expert and consistent analysis of high-resolution images (e.g., specialized photographs) of discrete regions of the eye. DIRC “readers” use proprietary technologies and algorithms to characterize and quantify changes in the eye, leading to better diagnoses and treatments and to the development of new therapies.

Stephen J. Ryan Initiative for Macular Research
The Stephen J. Ryan Initiative for Macular Research (RIMR) brings together outstanding basic scientists, engineers, medical researchers, and clinicians to develop a better understanding of age-related atrophic macular degeneration (AMD). At annual RIMR conferences, these accomplished leaders from very different backgrounds and disciplines explore technologies, discoveries, and ideas. By sharing their diverse perspectives in interdisciplinary discussions and research collaborations, RIMR participants are improving AMD diagnostics and expanding the prospect of new treatments for the number one cause of visual impairment and blindness in older Americans.
