Research Interests

The retina provides a unique window into the central nervous system, allowing its neural and vascular tissues to be observed noninvasively and at extraordinary detail. My research focuses on advanced ophthalmoscopy, particularly adaptive optics imaging, to study retinal and systemic diseases at the cellular and subcellular levels.

I lead the Advanced Ophthalmic Imaging Laboratory, where we develop high-resolution instruments that combine adaptive optics with scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and optical coherence tomography. These technologies allow us to visualize individual photoreceptors and blood cells in the living human eye. Our current research uses this capability to investigate age-related macular degeneration, measure blood flow within individual retinal capillaries, and identify changes associated with hypertension, diabetes, and cerebral small-vessel disease.

We are also developing adaptive optics fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy to study the metabolic function of retinal cells at the molecular level. This work may lead to more sensitive biomarkers for detecting disease earlier, monitoring its progression, and evaluating new treatments. My long-term goal is to create imaging technologies that deepen our understanding of diseases affecting the eye and central nervous system and ultimately improve patient care.
