The Fall Vision Meeting is a small, high quality, international meeting sponsored by Optica for researchers in visual neuroscience, optics and psychophysics. The small and focused nature of the meeting and its single-track format foster active discussion and often forge friendships and collaborations.
This annual symposium continues to be held in partnership between SPIE and COS—Chinese Optical Society, providing an international showcase for the latest research in biomedical optics, advanced optical imaging, quantum and nonlinear optics, laser processing, plasmonics, holography, and more.
Our mission is to reduce worldwide visual disability and blindness by promoting the education and professional interaction of vitreoretinal specialists, providing optimal care for patients with vitreoretinal diseases, and encouraging, through clinical and basic research, the discovery and development of new means to further patient care.

Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a blinding mitochondrial disease that disproportionately affects young men. The diagnosis can be challenging with significant delays before a confirmed molecular diagnosis is reached. In this LHON Forum, we will discuss exciting developments in the field highlighting how a deeper understanding of the pathological mechanisms contributing to retinal ganglion cell loss is shaping the therapeutic landscape for this inherited optic nerve disorder.

Dr. Maria Grant is the Eivor and Alston Callahan, M.D., Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Most recently, she has worked on understanding the interactions between the gut microbiome, plasma microbiome, and bacterial derived peptides and metabolites on diseases of the eye and on pathogenesis of severe COVID infection.
Dr. Michael Fautsch is the Joseph E. and Rose Marie Green Professor of Visual Sciences, 2020 and Research Chair, Department of Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. His laboratory team is identifying new therapeutic targets and developing novel therapeutics to regulate pressure and preserve the function of the optic nerve, the ultimate site of eye damage leading to vision loss in glaucoma.
